I know God has a sense of humor! Case in point, David, alone, isolated in the midst of great sorrow and regret, says:

“For there is no one who regards me; There is no escape for me; No one cares for my soul. 5 I cried out to Thee, O LORD; I said, “Thou art my refuge, My portion in the land of the living. 6 “Give heed to my cry, For I am brought very low; Deliver me from my persecutors, For they are too strong for me.” Psalm 142:4-6

We can feel the angst of David, and how does God answer him?”

“So David departed from there and escaped to the cave of Adullam; and when his brothers and all his father’s household heard of it, they went down there to him. 2 And everyone who was in distress, and everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented, gathered to him; and he became captain over them. Now there were about four hundred men with him.” 1 Samuel 22:1-2

Now, that makes me chuckle, because I can imagine myself saying to God. “Really, this is your answer to my prayer? Now I’m the captain of 400 distressed, indebted, and discontent people? This is all I need!”

This crew of ne’er-do-wells became the “Mighty Men of Valor!” (You can review their exploits in 2 Samuel 23:8-37.)

They became so because their captain was a warrior, brave, faithful, Strong, full of faith, close to God, and when necessary deeply repentant.

Our So What?

Spend your time in the Bible, acquainting yourself with so great a cloud of witnesses and Jesus, our captain. You will be inspired to be like them.

“Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance, and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you may not grow weary and lose heart.” Hebrews 12:1-3

Brethren, let’s pray for one another.

“Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever.” Amen
